The Airport Divisional Police Command has arrested 52 motorcycle riders for allegedly organizing and participating in illegal street racing in Accra.
The operation was conducted along the George Walker Bush Highway, near Villaggio and the Dzorwulu Highway stretch, following reports of dangerous riding, traffic disruption and high-speed stunts.
According to the Ghana Police Service, the activities of the riders posed a serious danger to motorists, pedestrians and other road users.
Police impounded 71 motorcycles during the operation. The seized vehicles comprised 25 registered Royal motorbikes, 26 unregistered Royal motorbikes, 15 scooters and five heavy-duty power bikes.
A statement signed by Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng indicated that some of the suspects had travelled from outside Accra to participate in the gathering.
Preliminary screening showed that riders came from Kasoa, Tema, Nsawam, Ashaiman and Koforidua for the alleged street-racing event.
All 52 suspects remain in police custody and are undergoing screening as investigations continue.
They are expected to be prosecuted for applicable offences, including traffic violations, public nuisance and participation in an unlawful gathering.
The operation forms part of a broader police campaign to address motorcycle-related indiscipline on major roads and at busy intersections.
Under the Police Action Against Rider Indiscipline initiative, specialized teams have been deployed across Accra to identify and arrest riders who disregard traffic regulations.
The enforcement teams include uniformed, plainclothes and motorized officers who monitor offenders and, in some cases, follow them to their destinations before making arrests.
Police also disclosed that more than 250 motorcycle riders were arrested within three days for allegedly jumping red lights at major intersections across the capital.
Authorities warned that dangerous riding, unlicensed racing and disregard for traffic signals would not be tolerated.
The Ghana Police Service urged riders to obey road regulations and reminded motorcycle owners to ensure that their vehicles are properly registered and operated by licensed individuals.
Police said enforcement operations would continue across Accra and other urban areas to reduce crashes and protect road users.
