The Ghana Police Service has arrested and interdicted General Corporal Robert Koranteng following preliminary investigations into the incident that claimed the life of Ivan Baidoo, a 23-year-old law student at Central University.
Baidoo, who was a Level 200 student, died following a motorbike crash on the Tema Motorway on August 27, 2026.
He was travelling as a pillion passenger on a Yango-operated motorcycle ridden by Samuel Arthur Wesley when the incident occurred. Accounts provided by the rider and petitions submitted by the deceased’s family alleged that a police vehicle pursued them from the UPSA-Legon area before hitting the motorcycle from behind.
Video footage connected to the incident later circulated on social media, triggering widespread public concern and demands for a comprehensive investigation.
Baidoo’s family also appealed to the public for information and announced a GH¢50,000 reward for credible evidence that could assist in identifying and prosecuting those responsible for his death.
The Police Service subsequently identified General Corporal Koranteng as an officer allegedly connected to the incident. He has been taken into custody while investigations continue.
The Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department has taken over the case to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fatal crash and determine whether any criminal offences were committed.
Meanwhile, the Police Professional Standards Bureau is conducting a separate internal investigation into the officer’s conduct and possible breaches of police procedures.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public and Baidoo’s family that the matter will be thoroughly investigated. It said appropriate disciplinary and legal action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigations.
