The Ghana Police Service has taken a 12-year-old boy and a 34-year-old man into custody after a video showing the minor driving a heavy-duty vehicle circulated widely on social media.
The arrests were confirmed on Saturday, August 1, 2026, following public concern about road safety and the apparent endangerment of the child.
Police identified the vehicle as a DAF XF 105 articulated truck with registration number GS 3097-20.
The minor and the adult suspect, believed to be the truck’s regular driver, are being held by the Central Motor Traffic and Transport Department in Accra to assist with investigations.
Investigators are seeking to establish how the child gained access to the truck, where the incident occurred and whether the vehicle was driven on a public road.
The police are also investigating the circumstances under which the video was recorded and the level of involvement of the adult suspect.
In a statement, the Ghana Police Service reminded vehicle owners and drivers that allowing minors or unlicensed individuals to operate motor vehicles violates the Road Traffic Act.
Authorities warned that heavy-duty commercial vehicles require specialized knowledge and experience because of their size, weight and handling requirements.
Allowing an unqualified person to operate such a vehicle could endanger the driver, passengers, pedestrians and other road users.
The police cautioned parents, guardians, commercial transport operators and vehicle owners against giving children or other unauthorized persons control of motor vehicles.
The incident has attracted significant public attention, with many social media users calling for strict enforcement of road-safety laws and appropriate action against any adult found responsible.
Police said investigations were continuing and that further action would be taken based on their findings.
