The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested two people in connection with the fatal shooting of the newly enskinned Chief of Yidani, Naa Ntimla Nwenisim, and his son, Ntimla Bilaga.
The suspects have been identified as Majejiba Magne, 25, and Haruna Nlegle, 34. Their arrest followed an intelligence-led operation conducted nearly two weeks after the chief and his son were killed at their residence.
Police said investigations were continuing to identify and arrest any other individuals who may have participated in the attack.
Suspects Intercepted Near Chereponi
According to the Northern Regional Police Command, investigators received credible information on August 26, 2026, indicating that two people suspected of involvement in the killings were travelling from Dombine towards Chereponi.
Officers at Gushegu alerted their counterparts in Chereponi, who intercepted and arrested the two suspects.
Magne and Nlegle were subsequently transferred to the Yendi Divisional Police Command on August 27. They remain in police custody assisting with investigations.
The arrests followed intensified intelligence gathering and security patrols across Yidani, Dombine, Gushegu, Chereponi and neighboring communities.
Gunmen Attack Chief’s Residence
The chief and his son were killed during an attack at their residence in Yidani, located in the Gushegu area, on August 14, 2026.
Preliminary investigations indicate that three unidentified armed men entered the chief’s compound at about 3:00 a.m. and demanded to be shown his room.
When people in the compound refused to comply, the assailants allegedly fired into the roof of a nearby room before forcing open the chief’s door.
The gunmen then shot Naa Ntimla Nwenisim and Ntimla Bilaga before fleeing the scene.
The nature of the attack led investigators to believe that the chief and his son had been deliberately targeted. Police have not publicly disclosed a possible motive.
Five Spent Cartridges Recovered
Crime-scene investigators retrieved five spent BB cartridges from the compound.
A post-mortem examination was conducted at the Tamale Teaching Hospital on August 17. The findings established that both victims suffered multiple injuries consistent with shotgun fire.
The examination identified severe gunshot injuries and haemorrhagic shock as the causes of death.
The Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Wisdom Lavoe, said investigations were underway to establish the complete circumstances surrounding the killings.
Specialized Team Deployed to Yidani
Following the attack, the Inspector-General of Police deployed a special operations team from the Police Headquarters to support officers in the Northern Region.
Security patrols were also intensified in Yidani and surrounding communities to prevent further violence and deter possible retaliatory attacks.
The Police Command has appealed to residents of Yidani, Dombine,, Gushegu, Chereponi and nearby areas to provide credible information that could assist investigators.
Authorities assured members of the public that information provided to the police would be treated confidentially.
The bereaved family, local youth and residents have also been urged to remain calm and allow the law to take its course. Police warned against vigilantism and reprisal attacks, stressing that anyone found responsible for the killings would be prosecuted.
