President John Dramani Mahama has cut sod for the construction of a seven-storey multi-purpose car park and commercial complex at Terminal 3 of the Kotoka International Airport, as Ghana moves to expand airport infrastructure to meet rising passenger numbers.
The new facility is expected to provide about 2,030 covered parking spaces, alongside commercial, entertainment and hospitality facilities aimed at making the airport experience more convenient for travellers and other users.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Mahama said the government’s vision goes beyond simply increasing passenger numbers. He said Ghana is positioning itself as a preferred destination, a convenient transit point and a competitive aviation hub in Africa.
According to the President, passenger traffic at the airport increased from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025, putting additional pressure on existing infrastructure and highlighting the need for expanded facilities.
He said the government remains committed to improving aviation infrastructure and connectivity while promoting professionalism, discipline and courtesy across the sector.
President Mahama also disclosed that a number of ongoing airport projects are being financed through the balance sheets of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), without direct government funding.
The projects include a new GCAA control tower, the refurbishment of Terminal 2, a transfer concourse connecting Terminals 2 and 3, and the new Terminal 3 parking and commercial complex.
The latest development is expected to significantly increase parking capacity while creating additional space for businesses, entertainment and other services within the airport environment.
The project forms part of Ghana’s broader efforts to modernise its aviation infrastructure, accommodate growing passenger traffic and strengthen the country’s position as a leading aviation hub in the West African region.
