President John Mahama directs for the release of funds

President of Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate release of GHS300 million from the Contingency Fund to support relief operations and strengthen flood prevention measures following the heavy rains that inundated parts of Accra and several communities across southern Ghana.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, the Presidency said the funds would be shared equally, with GHS150 million earmarked for emergency assistance to individuals and communities affected by the flooding, while the remaining GHS150 million will be used to implement flood mitigation projects aimed at reducing the impact of future disasters.

The intervention forms part of the government’s broader response to the widespread flooding triggered by hours of intense rainfall, which caused significant damage to homes, businesses, and road networks in several parts of the country.

President Mahama has also directed the immediate deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to support the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other emergency agencies in ongoing rescue and relief operations.

Earlier on Tuesday, the President undertook an aerial inspection of the affected areas to assess the extent of the flooding and the damage caused. According to the Presidency, he also announced additional measures to safeguard lives and property and enhance the country’s resilience against future flooding as government agencies intensify their emergency response.
