President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to accountability, inclusive governance, and sustainable national development during a town hall meeting with members of the Ghanaian community in the United Kingdom.
The engagement, held in London, formed part of activities surrounding the Ghana-UK Investment Summit, a platform designed to strengthen bilateral trade relations, deepen economic cooperation, and attract strategic investments into Ghana.
Addressing participants, President Mahama emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties with Ghanaians living abroad and acknowledged the significant contributions of the diaspora to the country’s economic and social development. He noted that the government remains committed to creating opportunities for greater diaspora participation in national affairs.
As part of this commitment, the President outlined ongoing constitutional review processes aimed at expanding the role of Ghanaians abroad in governance and public service. He revealed that proposed reforms include provisions that would allow eligible dual citizens to serve in Parliament and hold ministerial appointments, broadening opportunities for diaspora involvement in leadership and decision-making.
President Mahama also highlighted Ghana’s improving economic outlook, pointing to growing international recognition of the country’s efforts to stabilize and reform its economy. He stated that Ghana is increasingly being viewed as a model for economic recovery, reflecting the impact of ongoing policy measures and reforms designed to restore growth and investor confidence.
On regional development, the President reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to African integration and stressed the importance of collaboration among African nations to unlock shared economic opportunities. He described the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a critical instrument for boosting intra-African trade, promoting industrialization, and driving long-term prosperity across the continent.
The town hall meeting provided an opportunity for members of the Ghanaian community in the UK to engage directly with the President, share concerns, and discuss issues affecting both the diaspora and developments back home.
The event also underscored the strategic role of Ghanaians living abroad in supporting national development, fostering international partnerships, and contributing to Ghana’s broader socio-economic transformation agenda.
President Mahama concluded by encouraging continued collaboration between the government and the diaspora, emphasizing that the collective efforts of Ghanaians at home and abroad remain essential to building a stronger and more prosperous nation.
