President John Dramani Mahama held a high-profile audience with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, bringing his five-day diplomatic working visit to the United Kingdom to a symbolic and strategic conclusion.

The meeting underscored the enduring relationship between Ghana and the United Kingdom, with both leaders discussing ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation across key sectors including trade, sustainable development, climate action, investment, and international partnership.

Traditional Ghanaian Presence at the Royal Audience

President Mahama arrived at Buckingham Palace dressed in a traditional Ghanaian smock, commonly known as a Fugu, highlighting Ghana’s rich cultural heritage during the royal engagement.

The private audience provided an opportunity for the two leaders to reaffirm the longstanding historical ties between Ghana and the United Kingdom while exploring new avenues for collaboration in an evolving global economic and political environment.

During the discussions, King Charles III reportedly expressed appreciation for Ghana’s active participation within the Commonwealth and acknowledged the country’s continued contributions to international peace, diplomacy, and regional stability.

The President was accompanied by a high-level Ghanaian delegation that included Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister for Finance; Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister for Foreign Affairs; and Sabah Zita Benson, Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

The presence of key economic and diplomatic officials highlighted the broader significance of the visit, which focused on strengthening economic partnerships and expanding investment opportunities between the two countries.

Strategic Engagements Across London

The Buckingham Palace audience marked the culmination of a series of high-level diplomatic and economic engagements undertaken by President Mahama during his stay in London.

On Tuesday, June 2, the Ghanaian leader held a breakfast meeting with Keir Starmer to discuss bilateral cooperation and shared priorities between the two governments.

As part of his economic outreach agenda, Mahama also visited the Palace of Westminster and participated in the opening of the trading session at the London Stock Exchange, where he promoted Ghana as a stable, reform-oriented, and attractive destination for foreign direct investment.

The President further engaged with policymakers, business leaders, and development stakeholders during the 12th Africa Debate held at the Guildhall. The forum focused on the future of British-African economic relations and the opportunities emerging from post-Brexit trade and investment frameworks.

Strengthening Ghana–UK Relations

President Mahama’s UK visit reflects Ghana’s broader strategy of deepening international partnerships, attracting foreign investment, and enhancing economic diplomacy.

The meeting with King Charles III served as a symbolic affirmation of the strong historical and cultural connections between the two nations, while reinforcing their shared commitment to cooperation in trade, sustainable development, climate resilience, and global peacebuilding.

As Ghana seeks to accelerate economic growth and expand its international partnerships, the outcomes of the President’s engagements in London are expected to contribute to stronger political, commercial, and diplomatic relations between Accra and the United Kingdom.
