President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to redevelop the Ho Sports Stadium into a state-of-the-art multi-purpose sports and entertainment complex as part of efforts to modernize Ghana’s sporting infrastructure.
The announcement was made on Friday, July 17, 2026, during an inspection tour of the more than 50-year-old stadium in the Volta Region as part of his nationwide “Resetting Ghana Tour.”
Modern Sports Facility Planned
According to President Mahama, the redevelopment project forms part of the government’s broader vision to improve sports infrastructure across the country while ensuring that Ghana meets international standards for hosting major football competitions.
A key objective of the project is to help Ghana secure at least five Confederation of African Football (CAF)-certified stadiums, enabling the country to host international matches and continental tournaments.
Stadium to Serve Multiple Purposes
President Mahama emphasized that the upgraded facility will not be limited to football activities. He expressed concern over the practice of allowing stadiums to remain underutilized when football matches are not being played.
Instead, the new Ho Sports Stadium will be designed as a multi-purpose venue capable of hosting recreational, sporting, entertainment, and community events throughout the year. The approach is also intended to support the government’s 24-Hour Economy agenda by promoting continuous economic and social activity around the facility.
Advanced Pitch Technology
As part of the redevelopment, the stadium will feature a high-quality natural grass playing surface supported by a computerized irrigation system.
The modern irrigation technology is expected to maintain the pitch in optimal condition throughout the year while reducing long-term maintenance costs and ensuring the stadium meets international playing standards.
Budget and Construction Timeline
President Mahama disclosed that government will soon announce the project’s budgetary allocations.
Before construction begins, architectural designs for the redevelopment will be presented to residents and stakeholders within the municipality for public engagement. Following that consultation process, an official sod-cutting ceremony will be held to commence construction.
Part of a National Sports Infrastructure Drive
The Ho Sports Stadium redevelopment is part of a wider national sports infrastructure initiative aimed at expanding access to quality sporting facilities across Ghana.
In addition to upgrading the Ho Sports Stadium, the government has also unveiled plans to construct seven new regional stadiums in 2026, a move intended to promote equitable sports infrastructure development and strengthen Ghana’s capacity to host major sporting events while encouraging sports participation nationwide.
