The University of Ghana has commenced an investigation into a viral video showing a member of its security team allegedly assaulting a young man.
In a statement issued on April 11, 2026, the University’s Public Affairs Directorate indicated that Management had taken note of the footage circulating on social media, which appears to show an officer from the Safety and Security Services Directorate (SSSD) involved in the incident.
According to preliminary findings, the individual involved is not a student of the University. The statement explained that the young man had reportedly been apprehended by the security officer on suspicion of theft.
The University reaffirmed its strict stance against violence, stressing that it operates a zero-tolerance policy in such matters. As a result, Management has initiated a full-scale investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
It further highlighted that staff conduct is guided by the institution’s Consolidated Code of Conduct, which clearly defines acceptable behaviour, particularly in interactions with the public, as well as the sanctions for misconduct.
Management assured the public that if the officer is found culpable, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in line with University regulations and the laws of Ghana governing assault, following due process.
