Renowned Kenyan lawyer and academic Professor P.L.O. Lumumba abruptly ended his keynote address and walked off stage after conference organizers interrupted his presentation to welcome Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o.
The incident occurred during the 18th TICH Annual Scientific Conference at the Mama Grace Onyango Cultural and Social Centre in Kisumu, Kenya.
Professor Lumumba was speaking about Africa’s research challenges and the limited resources available to academic institutions when organizers asked him to pause following the governor’s late arrival.
Visibly displeased by the interruption, Lumumba argued that the decision reflected some of the institutional and leadership problems hindering Africa’s development.
“I’ll stop, but this is the kind of thing that holds Africa back. The governor knew that we are in the meeting. He chooses to come to interrupt, and we are here celebrating,” he said.
“What is important, is it what we are saying or that the governor is coming?” he questioned before stepping away from the microphone and leaving the stage.
A video of the incident quickly circulated on social media, triggering widespread debate about political protocol, punctuality and respect for professional events.
Many people supported Lumumba’s decision, describing it as a courageous protest against political entitlement and the culture of granting politicians preferential treatment. They argued that a scientific conference and its scheduled presentations should not be disrupted to accommodate a late-arriving public official.
Others maintained that organizers were following established protocol by formally acknowledging the governor’s presence. Some critics, however, said the interruption could have been handled more carefully without bringing Lumumba’s keynote address to an abrupt end.
The incident has since renewed public discussion about whether African institutions place excessive importance on political personalities at the expense of researchers, academics and other professionals.
