Black Star Experience Coordinator Rex Omar has called for the “Black Star” brand to represent the full breadth of Ghanaian achievement, extending its reach beyond its longstanding association with the senior national football team.
Speaking during regional stakeholder engagements in Cape Coast and Takoradi on Monday, October 5, 2026, the veteran highlife musician said the symbol should reflect national identity, cultural pride and excellence across different fields.
Rex Omar argued that although football had helped popularize the Black Star name, its significance should embrace the contributions of all Ghanaians, including those working in the creative and cultural sectors.
He outlined plans for the Black Star Experience, an initiative of the Office of the President, to promote Ghana through music, fashion, food, film and tourism.
The approach aims to showcase the country’s cultural diversity while strengthening its appeal as a destination for the global African diaspora. Through these sectors, the Secretariat hopes to connect national pride with opportunities for cultural exchange and tourism development.
One of the first activities supporting that vision is the Black Star Choral Music Contest, which will bring together choirs from schools, churches and communities across the country.
The competition will progress through regional stages, with successful groups advancing to a national final in Accra.
By involving grassroots performers, the Secretariat intends to make the Black Star Experience accessible to communities and give local talent a wider platform within Ghana’s cultural agenda.
