
Russia’s state-owned defense conglomerate Rostec is promoting its new Bizon counter-unmanned aerial system to potential customers in Egypt as demand for affordable protection against drones continues to grow.
Developed by Rostec’s High Precision Systems holding, the weapon will make its first international appearance at the El Alamein International Airshow in Egypt from September 8 to 10, 2026.
The marketing campaign targets one of Africa’s largest and best-equipped armed forces. However, no confirmed procurement agreement between Rostec and the Egyptian government has been announced.
The system’s international debut follows Ukraine’s unprecedented Independence Day display in Kyiv, where uncrewed aerial, ground and maritime platforms were presented instead of the tanks, crewed aircraft and marching formations normally associated with a military parade.
Together, the developments demonstrate how drones and counter-drone technologies are reshaping military planning and the international defense market.
Bizon Designed as Affordable Last Line of Defense
The Bizon, designated TKB-1167, is the export version of Russia’s domestically deployed Zubr counter-drone system.
It is designed to engage small, low-flying drones and loitering munitions that may be difficult or unnecessarily expensive to intercept with conventional surface-to-air missiles.
The system uses four 7.62mm PKT machine guns mounted together as a short-range point defense weapon. By relying on machine-gun ammunition, Bizon is intended to offer a cheaper method of destroying inexpensive drones approaching military positions, industrial facilities or other sensitive installations.
The cost imbalance created by modern drone warfare has become a major concern for armed forces. Using missiles worth hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars against relatively inexpensive unmanned aircraft may be operationally necessary, but it is difficult to sustain during prolonged attacks.
Bizon is intended to occupy the final layer of a broader air defense network, engaging drones that evade electronic warfare systems, interceptor aircraft or longer-range missiles.
Radar and Optical Sensors Support Automated Targeting
According to information released by Rostec, Bizon has its own surveillance radar for detecting and tracking small aerial targets.
The radar is paired with a multichannel electro-optical system incorporating daytime television cameras, thermal imaging, automatic optical tracking and a laser rangefinder. This combination is designed to allow the weapon to operate during the day or at night and under different visibility conditions.
Once a target has been detected, tracking and gun alignment can be performed automatically. A human operator remains responsible for authorizing the final decision to open fire.
This human-in-the-loop configuration is intended to shorten reaction times while retaining human control over the use of lethal force.
Mobile System Can Protect Strategic Installations
Bizon can reportedly operate as an independent counter-drone unit or as part of an integrated, layered air defense network.
The system can be mounted on a wheeled platform, allowing it to be repositioned to protect military bases, border posts, power facilities, airports and other critical infrastructure.
Its mobility could also enable armed forces to deploy it alongside maneuvering units or relocate it rapidly in response to changing intelligence about drone threats.
Rostec says the domestically designated Zubr version has already been supplied to Russian military units. The manufacturer is now seeking international customers for the export model.
Why Egypt Is a Major Target Market
Egypt maintains one of Africa’s largest conventional militaries, with substantial air, land and naval capabilities. Defense rankings such as Global Firepower regularly place the country among the continent’s strongest armed forces, although such rankings rely on broad quantitative indicators and should not be treated as definitive measures of combat effectiveness.
Securing an Egyptian customer would provide the Bizon system with considerable visibility across Africa and the Middle East.
Egypt also maintains longstanding military and technical relations with Russia while continuing to purchase equipment and receive security assistance from Western countries. This diversified procurement strategy has allowed Cairo to operate military hardware from several foreign suppliers.
Russia and Egypt previously expanded their cooperation in counter-drone technology during the Egypt Defense Expo in 2023. Rostec’s Ruselectronics holding and an Egyptian manufacturer agreed to cooperate on the licensed production of the civilian Zashchita anti-drone system.
The earlier partnership could provide a foundation for further discussions involving the Bizon, although no new production or purchase agreement has been confirmed.
Egypt Faces an Evolving Regional Drone Threat
Egypt’s interest in counter-drone technology reflects a wider change in the regional security environment.
Low-cost reconnaissance and attack drones are increasingly available to state militaries, insurgent organizations and other armed groups across North Africa, the Middle East and the Red Sea corridor.
Egypt must protect lengthy land borders, maritime routes, military facilities and strategically important infrastructure, including airports, energy installations and the Suez Canal.
Small drones could be used to collect intelligence, disrupt border operations or attack poorly protected installations. This has increased demand for layered defense systems combining radar, electronic warfare, guns, interceptor drones and missiles.
Ukraine Stages Uncrewed Independence Day Parade
Rostec’s export campaign comes shortly after Ukraine marked its 35th Independence Day on August 24, 2026, with what organizers presented as the world’s first military parade composed entirely of uncrewed systems.
The display in central Kyiv featured equipment operating across the air, land and maritime domains. Uncrewed ground vehicles travelled through the capital, while quadcopters, fixed-wing aircraft and interceptor drones represented Ukraine’s expanding aerial fleet.
Uncrewed surface vessels were also displayed on the Dnipro River. They included platforms from Ukraine’s Magura and Sea Baby families, which have played prominent roles in reconnaissance and attacks against Russian maritime assets.
Ukraine War Drives Demand for Counter-Drone Weapons
The war in Ukraine has demonstrated that comparatively inexpensive unmanned systems can threaten tanks, artillery positions, naval vessels, logistics routes and critical infrastructure.
It has also exposed weaknesses in traditional air defense structures. Many systems were designed to counter crewed aircraft, helicopters and missiles rather than large numbers of small drones flying close to the ground.
This operational reality has created international demand for more economical countermeasures. Armed forces increasingly seek combinations of electronic jamming, directed-energy weapons, interceptor drones, rapid-fire guns and conventional missiles.
Russia’s Bizon reflects one approach to that challenge: using automated sensors and concentrated machine-gun fire to create an affordable final defensive barrier.
Its appearance in Egypt does not yet amount to a confirmed sale. It nevertheless signals Rostec’s intention to compete for a growing counter-drone market across Africa and the Middle East, where governments are reassessing how to protect military positions and strategic infrastructure from the rapidly evolving threat of unmanned warfare.
