RwandAir is preparing to expand its long-haul operations across Europe and Asia as the Rwandan national carrier strengthens its fleet with five additional Airbus A330-200 aircraft.
The airline received the first aircraft under the expansion program at Kigali International Airport in August 2026, with four more wide-body jets expected to join its fleet.
The additional aircraft will provide RwandAir with greater passenger capacity and the range required to open new intercontinental routes while increasing frequencies on existing services.
The carrier is targeting further expansion into major European cities and markets in the Far East. The planned routes are expected to strengthen Kigali’s position as a connecting hub for travelers moving between Africa, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
RwandAir already uses Airbus A330 aircraft for several of its long-haul services. Adding five more jets will give the company greater flexibility in managing schedules, introducing new destinations and responding to growing demand for international travel.
The fleet expansion forms part of a wider five-year strategy to double the airline’s total number of aircraft. Management believes increasing both its wide-body and regional capacity will help RwandAir compete more effectively with larger African and international carriers.
The airline’s growth plans are also linked to the development of the new Bugesera International Airport near Kigali. The multibillion-dollar airport project is expected to provide the additional passenger-handling and operational capacity needed to support Rwanda’s ambition of becoming a major aviation and tourism hub.
Expanding services into Europe and the Far East could also create new opportunities for trade, tourism and investment by providing more direct links between Rwanda and major international markets.
The acquisition represents an important stage in RwandAir’s transformation from a largely regional operator into a carrier with a broader global network. However, specific new destinations and launch dates have not yet been formally announced.
With four additional A330-200s expected following the first delivery, the airline is positioning itself for a significant increase in long-haul operations over the coming years.
