Ghana high commissioner to UK

Ghana marked a historic diplomatic milestone on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, as Sabah Zita Benson officially assumed office as Ghana’s first female High Commissioner to the United Kingdom since the country gained independence in 1957.

The landmark moment was sealed during a formal ceremony at St James’s Palace, where H.E. Benson presented her Letters of Credence to King Charles III. In a rare historical first, she became the first High Commissioner to be received by a British monarch at St James’s Palace since 1910, adding further significance to the occasion.

A New Chapter in Ghana–UK Relations

H.E. Benson was appointed by John Dramani Mahama in May 2025, with a mandate to deepen bilateral relations between Ghana and the United Kingdom. Her tenure is expected to prioritize trade and investment, educational collaboration, and cultural exchange, building on the long-standing historical ties between the two nations.

The ceremony blended tradition with symbolism, as H.E. Benson arrived in a traditional horse-drawn carriage, accompanied by her husband, Bobby Benson, underscoring the diplomatic heritage of the British monarchy and the significance of the occasion.

Distinguished Record of Public Service

Before her appointment as High Commissioner, H.E. Benson held several high-profile public offices, including Minister for Information, Minister for Tourism, and Ghana’s Ambassador to the Czech Republic. Her extensive experience in governance and diplomacy is widely seen as a strong foundation for advancing Ghana’s interests in the UK.

Her historic appointment has been welcomed by many as a milestone for gender representation in Ghana’s diplomatic service and a signal of renewed engagement in Ghana–UK relations.

As she begins her tenure in London, expectations remain high that her leadership will usher in a new era of cooperation and mutual growth between the two countries.
