Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been elected as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), assuming the bloc’s rotating leadership at a critical time for regional unity and security.
Faye took over the chairmanship during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, succeeding Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio, whose one-year tenure has come to an end.
Leadership Transition at ECOWAS
As part of the leadership changes announced during the summit, retired Senegalese Air Force General and former Defence Minister Birame Diop was appointed as the new President of the ECOWAS Commission.
Diop succeeds Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, who served as the head of the Commission and oversaw the bloc’s executive functions during a period marked by political instability across the region.
Faye Takes Office Amid Regional Challenges
At 46 years old, President Faye assumes the ECOWAS chairmanship during one of the most challenging periods in the organization’s nearly five-decade history.
One of his immediate priorities will be repairing relations with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, three military-led nations that formally withdrew from ECOWAS and formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) after prolonged disagreements with the regional bloc.
Restoring dialogue and fostering cooperation between ECOWAS and the breakaway alliance is expected to be a key diplomatic test of Faye’s leadership.
Growing Security Concerns
Beyond political divisions, ECOWAS continues to face mounting security threats across West Africa.
Jihadist and terrorist groups operating in the Sahel have expanded their activities, with attacks increasingly spilling into coastal member states. Strengthening regional security cooperation and improving collective responses to terrorism are expected to remain high on the agenda under Faye’s leadership.
Focus on Reform and Regional Integration
President Faye is also widely expected to champion reforms aimed at strengthening ECOWAS as a regional institution.
As one of Africa’s younger heads of state, he has signaled support for deeper economic integration, stronger democratic governance, and greater opportunities for young people across the region. His leadership is expected to focus on rebuilding public confidence in ECOWAS while advancing policies that promote peace, stability, and sustainable economic growth.
