The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested seven people suspected of involvement in a series of armed robberies across Zebilla, Garu and Binduri.
The suspects were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation conducted by the Police Intelligence Directorate, the newly established Black Cobra Unit and members of the Zebilla Community Watchdogs.
They have been identified as Issaka Iddrisu, 20; Ali Tamimu, 21; Akugre Amobila, 26; Banabas Apiiga, 41; Abdul-Rashid Adamu, 38; Apiiga Alebena, 21; and Bilal Adabode, 31.
According to the police, preliminary investigations have linked the suspects to a wider network of gangs allegedly involved in robbery operations and the supply of weapons within the three districts.
Following the arrests, two residents reportedly identified two of the suspects as members of a three-man gang that allegedly robbed them at gunpoint in separate incidents.
The victims told investigators that the robbers took two Yamaha scooter motorbikes valued at GH¢30,000 and GH¢32,000, respectively.
They also alleged that the assailants threatened to kill them if they reported the attacks to the police.
The police said the identified suspects admitted their involvement during questioning and provided information about the source of the firearm allegedly used in the robberies.
Investigators were reportedly told that an individual based in Bawku supplied weapons to members of the network and provided a location where the firearms could be kept.
Police subsequently searched the residences of Abdul-Rashid Adamu, Apiiga Alebena and Bilal Adabode as part of the investigation.
The searches resulted in the recovery of two unregistered motorbikes, quantities of substances suspected to be hard drugs and GH¢29,550 in cash.
The police believe the money and other recovered items may be connected to the suspects’ alleged criminal activities. The substances will require forensic examination to determine their exact composition.
All seven suspects were brought before the Bolgatanga Circuit Court and remanded in police custody. They are expected to reappear on September 23, 2026.
The allegations against them have not been proven in court, and they remain entitled to the presumption of innocence until the case is determined.
Meanwhile, the Upper East Regional Police Command said intelligence operations had been intensified to identify and apprehend the alleged weapons supplier in Bawku.
The involvement of the Zebilla Community Watchdogs has also highlighted the importance of cooperation between residents and law-enforcement agencies in gathering local intelligence and responding to violent crime.
Police investigations are continuing to determine whether the suspects are connected to other unresolved robbery cases in Zebilla, Garu, Binduri and surrounding communities.
