Moroccan forward Soufiane Rahimi has surpassed Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan’s long-standing scoring record for Al Ain in Asian club competitions.
Rahimi achieved the milestone during Al Ain’s commanding 4-0 victory over Al Nassr in their opening AFC Champions League Elite fixture at the Hazza bin Zayed Stadium.
The Moroccan found the net in the 72nd minute, taking his continental tally for the Emirati club to 19 goals. He had entered the match level on 18 goals with Gyan and former Al Ain star Omar Abdulrahman.
His latest strike consequently moved him clear at the top of Al Ain’s scoring chart in Asian competitions and brought an end to a benchmark that had stood for 12 years.
Gyan established his record during a highly successful period with Al Ain. The former Black Stars captain was particularly influential during the 2014 AFC Champions League campaign, finishing as the tournament’s leading scorer with 12 goals.
The Ghanaian striker’s powerful performances and prolific scoring helped establish him as one of the most celebrated foreign players in Al Ain’s history. He scored 128 goals across all competitions during his time with the UAE club.
Rahimi has steadily built his own legacy since joining Al Ain. His pace, movement and efficiency in front of goal have made him an important figure in the club’s recent continental campaigns.
He played a central role in Al Ain’s 2024 AFC Champions League triumph, scoring crucial goals as the UAE side secured its first Asian title in 21 years.
The record-breaking goal against Al Nassr adds another major achievement to Rahimi’s career and establishes him as Al Ain’s outright leading scorer in Asian club competitions.
Although Gyan’s continental record has now been overtaken, the former Ghana captain’s achievements remain an important part of the club’s history. His performances, particularly during the 2014 campaign, set the standard that Rahimi has now exceeded.
