South Africa has officially introduced a new Electronic Travel Authorization system as part of efforts to modernize its immigration services and replace paper-based visa applications with a fully digital process.
President Cyril Ramaphosa launched the ETA platform at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
During its initial rollout, the system will be available to citizens of China, India, Indonesia and Mexico who intend to visit South Africa for tourism or short-term business activities.
The first phase follows an earlier pilot involving delegates from the four countries who attended the G20 Summit during South Africa’s presidency.
Under the new system, eligible travelers can complete the entire application process online. Applicants can submit personal information and supporting documents, pay the required processing fee and receive a decision without visiting a South African embassy or consulate.
The platform also incorporates facial recognition and biometric identity verification to strengthen security and reduce the risk of fraud. Once approved, the travel authorization is linked electronically to the applicant’s passport and includes a secure QR code.
Upon arrival in South Africa, border-control technology will compare the traveler with the biometric information provided during the online application. The system is expected to support faster identity checks and improve efficiency at ports of entry.
The Department of Home Affairs views the ETA platform as a central part of its broader immigration reform program. Officials expect the digital system to reduce application delays, improve transparency and make South Africa more accessible to international visitors.
Although the first phase is restricted to tourists and short-term business travelers from four countries, the government plans to expand the platform progressively.
Future phases are expected to include other countries whose citizens require visas to enter South Africa. Authorities also intend to extend the system to long-term immigration categories, including applications for work and study visas.
The introduction of the ETA system is expected to support tourism, business travel and investment by simplifying entry procedures while strengthening identity verification and border security.
