South Africa’s Deputy Police Chief Sibiya Resigns Amid Criminal Charges and Corruption Allegations

South Africa’s suspended deputy police chief

South Africa’s suspended deputy national police commissioner, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, has resigned from the South African Police Service (SAPS) as he faces criminal charges and separate allegations of corruption.

His legal representative submitted the resignation shortly after an internal disciplinary hearing began on Monday, October 12, 2026. SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that his employment ended with immediate effect.

According to Mathe, the police service regards his departure as a “dishonorable discharge” because disciplinary proceedings were pending when he resigned.

Sibiya, who had been suspended since September 2025, remains in custody following his arrest in September 2026. His bail application was scheduled to continue at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, October 13.

The criminal case includes charges of rape, human trafficking and sexual grooming of a child. Authorities allege that he raped an 18-year-old woman and groomed a 16-year-old girl. Sibiya denies the allegations.

Separately, the former senior officer has been implicated in testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is examining alleged criminal infiltration and political interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system.

The commission has heard allegations that Sibiya received money and 20 impalas from businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. Questions have also been raised about his involvement in the handling of 121 case dockets transferred from the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team.

Sibiya has denied wrongdoing, and the allegations have not resulted in a finding of guilt against him. His resignation ends his employment with SAPS while the separate criminal case remains before the courts.
