
Elon Musk’s Starlink has officially launched its satellite internet service in the Seychelles, marking another major milestone in the company’s rapid expansion across Africa.
The low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network became fully operational across the island nation’s 115 islands on July 18, 2026, according to Seychelles Vice President Sebastien Pillay.
The Seychelles rollout comes just two days after Starlink activated services in Côte d’Ivoire on July 16, 2026, bringing the company’s total number of active African markets to 28.
With the latest expansion, SpaceX has now established Starlink services in exactly half of Africa’s 54 United Nations-recognized sovereign states.
A New Phase in Starlink’s African Strategy
Unlike many of Starlink’s earlier African launches, which focused heavily on remote communities with limited or no traditional internet infrastructure, the Seychelles represents a different approach.
The island nation is already one of Africa’s most digitally advanced markets.
According to DataReportal, approximately 87.4% of Seychelles’ population, or about 117,000 people, were using high-speed internet by the end of 2025.
The country already has:
- Extensive mobile broadband coverage
- Established fiber-optic networks
- Existing telecom providers serving urban and residential customers
Rather than replacing a lack of connectivity, Starlink is expected to complement existing systems by providing:
- High-reliability backup internet
- Low-latency broadband services
- Improved connectivity for maritime operations
- Enhanced support for remote businesses and enterprises across the archipelago
Regulatory Approvals Shape Starlink’s Growth
Starlink’s expansion across Africa has been heavily influenced by differing regulatory approaches among governments.
Faster Approvals
In Seychelles, authorities granted Starlink an Internet Service Provider (ISP) license in February 2026, allowing the company to begin operations months later.
Côte d’Ivoire also accelerated Starlink’s entry by approving a temporary 12-month operational framework that enabled the company to launch services while longer-term regulatory arrangements are finalized.
Markets Still Facing Restrictions
However, Starlink’s progress has not been uniform across the continent.
Some major economies remain unavailable to the service due to regulatory challenges.
In South Africa, Starlink equipment remains restricted because of the country’s Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) ownership requirements for telecommunications companies.
Other countries, including Namibia, have rejected Starlink licensing applications over regulatory and administrative issues.
Africa Becomes Key Battleground in Satellite Internet Race
Starlink’s African expansion comes as technology companies compete for a share of the continent’s growing digital market.
Africa’s population exceeds 1.3 billion people, but average internet usage remains significantly lower than many other regions, creating substantial opportunities for satellite providers.
Amazon’s Project Kuiper Enters the Competition
Starlink is facing increasing competition from other satellite internet initiatives, particularly Amazon’s Project Kuiper, which is developing its own low Earth orbit satellite network.
The competition is expected to intensify as global technology companies seek to expand affordable, high-speed internet access across emerging markets.
Starlink Moves Beyond Satellite Dishes
To strengthen its position in Africa, Starlink is also exploring direct satellite-to-mobile connectivity.
The company has partnered with Airtel Africa on a major initiative aimed at delivering satellite-powered messaging and data services directly to standard smartphones.
The planned rollout, expected to expand gradually through 2026, could eventually provide connectivity across 14 African countries without requiring traditional Starlink satellite dishes.
Seychelles Launch Highlights Changing Connectivity Landscape
Starlink’s arrival in Seychelles demonstrates the evolving role of satellite internet in Africa.
While early deployments focused on connecting underserved rural communities, the company is increasingly targeting markets where satellite technology can provide additional reliability, specialized services, and competition within already developed digital ecosystems.
