Youth groups in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region are demanding the release of Zongdan Boyak Kolog, a small-scale miner popularly known as “Polo,” and calling for the removal of the District Chief Executive.
Kolog was arrested by security personnel deployed from Accra. The youth groups claim his arrest is connected to a dispute over a mining concession involving Earl International Group Ghana Gold Limited, formerly known as Shaanxi Mining Ghana Limited.
The groups say Kolog holds a valid mining concession at Gbane. They also point to a High Court order directing the Ghana Police Service to protect and assist his operations, which they say was later reaffirmed by the court.
The youth accuse the DCE’s office of failing to protect local interests and worsening tensions in the community. They are calling for Kolog’s immediate release and the removal of the DCE.
The information available did not include the security agencies’ stated reason for the arrest or a response from the DCE or Earl International to the allegations.
