Tanzania Announces First Natural Gas Discovery in More Than a Decade

Tanzania has announced a natural gas discovery estimated at 223 billion cubic feet, marking the country’s first reported new find in more than 10 years.

Energy Minister Juma Homera announced the discovery on October 27, 2026, describing it as an important development for domestic energy supply and industrial growth.

The gas was found at the Kasa-1X ST2 exploration well in the Mnazi Bay area of southern Tanzania, through a partnership between the state-owned Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) and French energy company Maurel & Prom.

Production Could Begin in November

Maurel & Prom has indicated that production could begin as early as November 2026, potentially adding new supplies to Tanzania’s domestic market.

The discovery follows a drilling programme that also included the MB-5 and MS-2 wells, which are intended to strengthen gas output from Mnazi Bay.

Before the announcement, Tanzania’s total discovered natural gas resources were reported at approximately 57.5 trillion standard cubic feet.

Support for Electricity and Industry

Homera said additional gas production would help meet rising demand associated with industrial expansion and other economic activities.

More than 80% of the gas produced at Mnazi Bay is used to generate electricity at power plants in Mtwara and Dar es Salaam. That figure refers to how the field’s gas is used, rather than natural gas’s share of Tanzania’s total electricity generation.

The minister said increased domestic supply could help reduce exposure to fluctuations in imported energy prices and support local industries.

Talks Underway on Small-Scale LNG Projects

TPDC is also discussing potential small-scale liquefied natural gas projects with four investors, with three projects envisaged for the Mtwara area.

Authorities expect these investments to expand access to natural gas, create employment and support its use in transport as an alternative to petrol and diesel.

The discovery provides an opportunity to strengthen Tanzania’s energy supply, although its contribution will depend on development progress and sustained production.
