Ghana’s three major teacher unions have suspended their two-week nationwide strike following an agreement with the government on outstanding promotion payments and allowances. Members have been instructed to return to classrooms on Monday, October 12, 2026.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) announced the decision after negotiations involving the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the Ministry of Employment and the Council of State.
Under the agreement, the government will address promotion placement and arrears for an initial group of approximately 51,000 to 52,000 teachers whose records have been processed by the Ghana Education Service. Payment is scheduled for on or before October 16, 2026, through a supplementary voucher.
The remaining affected teachers, whose documentation was submitted later, are expected to have their promotion placement and arrears addressed by October 31, 2026.
The agreement also provides for an increase in the Continuous Professional Development allowance to GH¢3,100, payable tax-free in December 2026. Negotiations on the Digital Instruction Support Allowance have concluded, with payment scheduled for November 2026.
For the Deprived Area Allowance, the government has committed to completing the implementation arrangements ahead of a planned rollout in January 2027.
Union leaders said suspending the industrial action would allow teaching and learning to resume and ease public concern. They pledged to maintain engagement with state officials and monitor implementation to ensure that all commitments in the signed agreement are fulfilled.
