The Tema Regional Police Command has intercepted 866 parcels of a white powdered substance suspected to be cocaine, with an estimated street value of US$6.928 million.
The consignment was discovered during an intelligence-led operation conducted within the Tema Harbor enclave on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.
Tema Regional Police Commander DCOP Eric Asamoah Asiedu said officers received credible information at about 7:50 p.m. that suspected narcotics were being concealed in sacks of gari and loaded into a 40-foot container at a warehouse for export.
A police team was immediately dispatched to the location, where officers allegedly found three men supervising the loading of the sacks into a container mounted on a white DAF truck with registration number WR 1118-10.
The suspects were identified as Gilano Horwin, a 31-year-old Dutch national; John Mensah Sabah, 41; and Alhaji Iddris Haruna, 52.
Police transported the suspects, truck and consignment to the Tema Regional Police Headquarters. A detailed search of the sacks reportedly uncovered 866 wrapped parcels containing a white powdered substance believed to be cocaine.
According to the Regional Police Commander, Horwin allegedly told investigators that the substance was cocaine and claimed ownership of the consignment. His alleged statement has not yet been tested in court.
The three suspects remain in police custody to assist with investigations. The seized parcels have also been secured as exhibits and will undergo forensic examination to establish the exact nature of the substance.
Investigators are working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attempted export and identify other individuals who may be connected to the consignment.
DCOP Asiedu described the interception as one of the largest suspected drug seizures recorded by the Tema Regional Police Command in recent years.
The command said it would continue using intelligence-led operations and public cooperation to disrupt the transportation and export of illegal drugs through the region.
The suspects remain presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
