Three people have reportedly died and at least 15 others, including a police officer, sustained injuries after violence erupted at New Winneba in the Central Region.
The clash, which is believed to be connected to a land dispute, occurred at about 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
Initial reports indicate that a group of about 300 people, some allegedly armed with firearms, cutlasses, stones and sticks, entered parts of the township and attacked residents.
Several properties were damaged during the violence, including shops and residential buildings belonging to residents of the community.
The injured victims were transported to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical treatment. The identities of the three deceased individuals have not yet been disclosed.
Security personnel from the Central Regional Police Command, Winneba Divisional Police Headquarters and patrol teams from the Agona Swedru District were deployed to the community to restore order and prevent further attacks.
The Inspector-General of Police also directed the deployment of reinforcements from the National Police Headquarters. The additional security team was supported by two armored vehicles.
Police reportedly brought the situation under control by about 2:45 p.m., although personnel remained stationed in the community to maintain law and order.
Investigations have commenced to determine the circumstances that triggered the clash, identify those responsible and assess the extent of the damage.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to protect lives and property and prevent retaliatory attacks.
The police had not immediately confirmed the specific events that led to the violence or released the identities of the victims.
