Three Ghanaian technology innovators — Kwaw Fletcher Frimpong, Dominic Damoah, and Philemon Hini — have earned international recognition after their artificial intelligence governance platform, Human In The Loop, secured the prestigious People’s Voice Award at the 30th Annual Webby Awards in New York City.
Widely regarded as “The Internet’s Highest Honour,” the Webby Awards recognized the Ghanaian startup alongside some of the world’s biggest technology and entertainment companies, including Apple, Google, and Netflix. The achievement places the young African tech venture among an elite global class of digital innovators shaping the future of the internet.
The competition was intense, with organizers receiving more than 13,000 entries from over 70 countries worldwide. The People’s Voice category was ultimately decided through a massive global public voting process that attracted more than 4.6 million votes from approximately 940,000 unique participants.
The award-winning platform, Human In The Loop, was developed to address growing international concerns surrounding artificial intelligence accountability and oversight. The software is designed to ensure that automated systems used in sectors such as healthcare, banking, and finance remain subject to human review and intervention before major decisions are implemented.
Kwaw Fletcher Frimpong, one of the platform’s co-founders, specializes in AI security and governance frameworks with a focus on ethical compliance and regulatory standards. Meanwhile, Dominic Damoah is a San Francisco-based machine learning engineer and technology entrepreneur who contributed to the platform’s advanced AI systems architecture.
The third co-founder, Philemon Hini, is an AI engineer and digital forensics specialist known for his work in risk management and audit technologies within Africa’s financial sector. Together, the trio developed a platform capable of auditing, reviewing, and approving AI-generated conclusions in real time before those decisions are executed.
As artificial intelligence systems increasingly influence critical areas such as medical diagnostics, insurance approvals, and financial lending, concerns over algorithmic bias, transparency, and so-called “black-box” decision-making have intensified globally. The Human In The Loop platform aims to reduce those risks by embedding direct human oversight into automated workflows.
Leadership at the Webby Awards praised the Ghanaian-built platform as a “defining force in shaping the internet’s future,” highlighting its contribution to responsible AI development and digital accountability.
The victory is being celebrated as a major milestone for Ghana’s growing technology ecosystem and a broader sign of Africa’s rising influence in the global artificial intelligence and digital innovation landscape.
