Three people have been confirmed dead following a devastating head-on collision on the Kyebi–Asikam road in Ghana’s Eastern Region.
The accident, which occurred on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, involved a Toyota RAV4 and a Kia Picanto. Several other occupants reportedly sustained injuries and were transported to hospital for emergency treatment.
Preliminary findings released by the Ghana National Fire Service indicated that the Toyota RAV4 lost control while traveling on the road. The vehicle reportedly crossed into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the oncoming Kia Picanto.
The force of the impact caused extensive damage to both vehicles, leaving some of the occupants trapped inside the wreckage.
Emergency personnel from the Kibi Fire Station were dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call. Upon arrival, the firefighters began a rescue operation to remove the victims from the damaged vehicles.
The team successfully extricated the surviving occupants and handed them over for transportation to the Kibi Government Hospital, where they received emergency medical care.
Unfortunately, three occupants of the Kia Picanto could not be saved and were pronounced dead at the scene. Information about the identities of the victims had not been released, while the exact number and medical condition of those injured remained unclear.
The crash caused disruption along the Kyebi–Asikam road as emergency responders worked to rescue the victims and manage the accident scene.
Investigations are expected to establish the full circumstances that caused the driver of the Toyota RAV4 to lose control. Authorities will also seek to determine whether speeding, wrongful overtaking, mechanical failure, poor visibility or other road conditions contributed to the collision.
The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the dangers motorists face on Ghana’s inter-town roads, where vehicles often travel at high speeds and drivers may attempt risky overtaking maneuvers.
Following the accident, the Eastern Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service issued an urgent road-safety appeal to motorists.
Drivers were advised to obey speed limits, remain alert and exercise extreme caution, particularly when traveling on busy highways and inter-town routes. The service also cautioned motorists against wrongful overtaking and other dangerous driving practices that could place passengers and fellow road users at risk.
Motorists were further encouraged to assess traffic conditions carefully before overtaking and avoid unnecessary competition on the road. Drivers should also ensure that their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on long-distance journeys.
The GNFS emphasized that many serious road accidents can be prevented when motorists respect traffic regulations, maintain safe speeds and exercise patience behind the wheel.
The deaths on the Kyebi–Asikam road add to continuing concerns about fatal traffic accidents in Ghana. The incident underscores renewed calls for stronger enforcement of road-safety regulations and greater responsibility among motorists to reduce preventable deaths and injuries.
