President Bola Tinubu has approved the recruitment process for 3,252 verified Parent-Teacher Association teachers serving in Federal Unity Colleges and Federal Technical Colleges across Nigeria.
The decision is expected to address persistent teacher shortages in federal secondary schools while offering a path to permanent employment for educators who have worked for years without full civil-service benefits.
Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa announced the approval in a statement issued on Thursday, August 6, 2026, through his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Ikharo Attah.
According to the minister, priority will be given to verified PTA teachers, some of whom have served federal institutions for nearly 25 years under temporary employment arrangements.
“The president has approved the recruitment of teachers. Priority will be given to absorbing verified PTA teachers, many of whom have served in our Federal Unity Colleges and Federal Technical Colleges for almost 25 years,” Alausa said.
The approval followed a comprehensive verification exercise conducted by an inter-ministerial committee. The committee confirmed the eligibility of 3,252 teachers across three professional cadres: Education Officers, Assistant Education Officers and Technical Instructors.
Their formal absorption into the federal public service remains subject to the completion of statutory recruitment requirements.
Alausa said integrating the experienced teachers would improve teacher-to-student ratios, preserve institutional knowledge and strengthen classroom instruction in federal colleges.
For years, many Federal Unity Colleges have relied on teachers employed and paid through Parent-Teacher Associations to fill staffing gaps. Despite performing similar duties to permanent government employees, some have worked for between 10 and 25 years without job security, pension coverage or other civil-service benefits.
The arrangement has also placed an additional financial burden on parents, whose contributions have been used to pay the stipends of temporary teachers. The regularization exercise is expected to reduce that dependence once the affected educators are formally absorbed.
The Ministry of Education said it would work with relevant government agencies to complete the outstanding procedures required before appointment letters are issued.
Alausa assured the teachers that the process would be conducted fairly, transparently and in accordance with public-service regulations.
He described investment in teachers as essential to improving educational standards, stressing that qualified and professionally supported educators are central to better learning outcomes.
The recruitment forms part of the Federal Government’s wider efforts to strengthen the teaching profession and reposition Federal Unity Colleges as centers of academic excellence. Further information about appointments and deployment is expected from the Federal Ministry of Education after the statutory procedures are completed.
