Tiriane Balbine Nadège Noah has been elected national president of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC), becoming the first woman to lead the opposition party since its formation.
Noah secured 1,246 of the 1,286 ballots cast at an extraordinary elective convention held at the party’s headquarters in Odza, Yaoundé, on Saturday, October 17, 2026. Her 96.88 per cent share of the vote gives her a renewable five-year mandate.
Pierre Emmanuel Binyam received 29 votes despite withdrawing from the contest too late for his name to be removed from the ballot. The remaining 11 ballots were blank.
The election confirms Noah as the party’s substantive leader after several weeks as interim president. Previously the MRC’s second vice-president, she assumed temporary leadership following the resignations of longtime leader Professor Maurice Kamto and First Vice-President Mamadou Mota on September 8, 2026.
Her immediate task will be to strengthen the party’s organisational structures ahead of the 2027 local and municipal elections.
The convention went ahead despite reported attempts by government authorities to restrict or prevent the gathering, adding political significance to the leadership transition.
In her acceptance speech, Noah paid tribute to grassroots members and activists who had made sacrifices for the party.
“All the activists who have paid with their lives, their freedom, their safety, and their commitment deserve recognition,” she said.
Her election opens a new chapter for the MRC as it prepares for upcoming electoral contests following the departure of its longstanding leadership.
