Two Accra International Airport Workers Dismissed Over Alleged Extortion

Two Accra International Airport Workers Dismissed

Two employees at Accra International Airport, formerly known as Kotoka International Airport, have been dismissed following allegations that some workers were demanding money from passengers before performing their official duties.

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) took action after a video recorded by a frustrated Ghanaian traveler circulated widely on social media and attracted strong public criticism.

In the video, the passenger alleged that he was repeatedly stopped at different airport checkpoints by workers who asked him for money. He described the practice as widespread rather than isolated, claiming that nearly every staff member he encountered made a similar demand.

“If you meet 20 workers, all 20 will ask you for money,” the traveler said while recounting his experience.

The video generated significant public outrage among Ghanaians at home and abroad. Several other travelers reportedly joined the discussion by sharing accounts of similar encounters at the airport.

Following the backlash, airport management launched an inquiry to identify the workers involved. Two employees linked to the alleged misconduct were subsequently dismissed.

The action forms part of efforts to protect passengers, uphold professional standards and preserve the reputation of Ghana’s main international airport. Travelers are expected to receive all authorized airport services without being pressured to make unofficial payments.

In a separate development, GACL has announced ongoing improvements to security-screening equipment at Terminals 2 and 3.

The advanced screening system is expected to make passenger checks faster and more convenient. Once fully operational, travelers will be able to leave large electronic devices, including laptops, inside their hand luggage during security inspections.

The upgrades are intended to reduce delays at screening points while strengthening security and improving the overall passenger experience at the airport.
