Residents of Somanya in the Eastern Region have apprehended two men suspected of stealing a commercial tricycle, popularly known as a Pragya, after a chase through the community.
The vehicle, bearing registration number M-26-ES-240, was reportedly taken while parked. Its owner said he had locked the steering wheel before leaving it, but the men allegedly bypassed the mechanism and drove away.
Their attempt to leave with the tricycle drew the attention of community members, who became suspicious of their movements. Residents pursued the vehicle, intercepted the two men and recovered the tricycle.
The suspects and the vehicle were subsequently handed over to the Somanya Police Command. The tricycle remains in police custody as investigators examine how it was taken despite the steering lock and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Some residents praised the quick response by community members, saying their intervention prevented the owner from losing a vehicle used for commercial work. They also appealed to the police to increase routine patrols in Somanya to help deter theft.
Police sources say the two suspects are expected to be processed for court after preliminary investigations are completed.
