Two people have died and eight others sustained injuries in a road accident at Dompoase, near Komenda, on the Cape Coast–Takoradi highway.
The crash involved a commercial Toyota Hiace minibus with registration number AS 6145-24 and a broken-down truck registered GN 2491-14, which was parked along the shoulder of the road.
Preliminary police reports and eyewitness accounts indicate that another vehicle travelling from Takoradi towards Cape Coast attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre.
The driver of the oncoming minibus reportedly swerved sharply to avoid a head-on collision. The vehicle subsequently veered off the highway and crashed into the stationary truck.
Ten people were travelling in the minibus when the accident occurred. One passenger died instantly, while another victim became trapped in the mangled vehicle.
Emergency personnel eventually freed the trapped passenger from the wreckage, but the victim was later pronounced dead.
The remaining eight occupants sustained injuries of varying severity, with three reportedly in critical condition.
Personnel from the Komenda Fire Station of the Ghana National Fire Service received a distress call at about 6:55 p.m. and arrived at the accident scene within 15 minutes. The firefighters carried out the rescue and extrication operation while helping to secure the area.
The National Ambulance Service subsequently transported the injured survivors to the Elmina Polyclinic for emergency medical treatment.
Following the deadly crash, the Central Regional Fire Command renewed its appeal to motorists to obey road safety regulations, maintain reasonable speeds and avoid reckless overtaking.
Drivers have also been urged to exercise greater caution on the busy Cape Coast–Takoradi highway, particularly when approaching stationary vehicles or sections of the road with limited visibility.
