Two people have died and four others sustained injuries following a fiery multi-vehicle collision involving an Intercity STC passenger bus on the Accra–Kumasi Highway.
The accident occurred on Monday, August 3, 2026, at Etukrom, near Bunso Junction and the Birimso Bridge in the Eastern Region.
The crash involved the STC long-distance bus, a fuel tanker, a Mitsubishi pickup truck with registration number GE 8602-17 and a Kia Sorento registered GT 8601-14.
A massive fire reportedly erupted following the collision, engulfing the bus, tanker and pickup truck. The three vehicles were extensively burned and reduced to wreckage.
The impact also forced one of the tankers off the bridge and into a nearby river, where it continued to burn. The Kia Sorento escaped the fire but suffered severe structural damage.
Six people, comprising four men and two women, were rescued and transported to the Hawa Memorial Hospital in Osiem for treatment. Two later succumbed to their injuries, while the remaining four survivors are receiving medical care.
Authorities have not yet publicly disclosed the identities of those who died.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service were deployed to contain the blaze, secure the fuel spill and support rescue operations. Firefighters eventually brought the inferno under control and worked with other emergency teams to clear the affected section of the highway.
The accident completely blocked both directions of the N6 highway, bringing traffic between Accra and Kumasi to a standstill and leaving motorists stranded as emergency personnel worked at the scene.
The highway has since been cleared to allow traffic to resume.
Police and transport authorities have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the collision. Officials are expected to examine how the vehicles crashed and whether speeding, mechanical failure, poor visibility or another factor contributed to the incident.
