Two Dead, One Missing After Mining Pit Collapses at Sefwi Datano

Two confirmed dead after galamsey pit collapses at Sefwi Datano

Two miners have died and another remains missing after a suspected illegal mining pit collapsed at Sefwi Datano in the Bodi District of the Western North Region on Sunday, October 18, 2026.

The deceased, identified as Kwaku Charles and Nana Dibi, were both believed to be in their early thirties. They were reportedly digging for gold at a site where they regularly worked when the ground gave way, trapping them underground.

Unit Committee Member Joseph Debrah alerted community leaders to the incident, prompting local youth and personnel from the Bodi Police to mobilize for a rescue operation.

An excavator was brought to the site to help remove the earth and reach the trapped miners. Reports indicate that one of the bodies sustained severe injuries during the recovery process.

The bodies of the two miners have been taken to the Juaboso Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

A third miner remained unaccounted for as search efforts continued. The incident has left families and residents of Sefwi Datano mourning while they await news of the missing person.
