Two final-year students of Ekumfi Obidan-Potwabin Basic School have died after a tipper truck struck them in the Ekumfi District of the Central Region on Tuesday afternoon, October 6, 2026.
A third student sustained severe injuries and was reported to be in critical condition.
The three students were walking along the roadside after leaving school when the truck, reportedly travelling at high speed, lost control and hit them.
One student died at the scene. Another was taken to the Roman Catholic Hospital in Mankessim but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The students had attended voluntary lessons organised by the school administration to prepare final-year candidates for their upcoming examinations amid the nationwide teachers’ strike.
Emmanuel Ekow Arthur, Deputy Chairman of the School Management Board, said the deaths had devastated the school community.
The incident has renewed concerns among residents about speeding and the safety of children using roads near schools. They have appealed to the Ekumfi District Assembly and the police to install speed ramps and strengthen enforcement of road safety rules to prevent further deaths.
