The Nkawie Circuit Court in the Ashanti Region has fined two friends GH¢6,000 each for stealing excavator components valued at GH¢144,000 from a businessman at Bonteso in the Amansie West District.
Kwame Asare and Bismark Kobby, both 20 and unemployed, pleaded guilty to conspiracy and stealing. The court, presided over by Robert Addo, ordered that each serve three months in prison if they fail to pay their fines.
Prosecuting, Police Sergeant Ernest Derry told the court that the pair went to Nana Osei Kwadwo’s residence on September 5, 2026, and stole an excavator engine blade, a control board and other components.
The complainant conducted his own investigation and, with assistance from neighbors, apprehended the two men and handed them over to the Ahwerewa police.
According to the prosecution, both admitted the theft in their caution statements, citing economic hardship. They claimed there was “too much hunger in the town” and said they intended to buy food with the proceeds.
The pair told police they had sold the components for GH¢6,500 to a person known as Obolo, who remained at large.
