Two people have died and several others sustained injuries following a head-on collision involving a Scienta vehicle and a Metro Mass Transit bus at Assin Fosu in the Central Region.
The accident occurred at about 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 16, 2026. The Scienta was reportedly travelling from Cape Coast when it collided with the MMT bus coming from Kumasi.
Central North Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department Commander, ASP Wonder Lumor, said preliminary investigations indicated that the crash resulted from a dangerous overtaking maneuver.
According to him, a vehicle travelling ahead of the Scienta slowed down to make a turn. The driver of the Scienta allegedly attempted to overtake by moving into the opposite lane, placing the vehicle directly in the path of the approaching bus.
The driver of the Scienta and one passenger died from injuries sustained in the collision. Five other occupants suffered varying degrees of injury and were taken to hospital for treatment.
The MMT bus driver, William Aboagye, confirmed that none of the passengers aboard the bus died in the accident.
The impact forced the bus off the road and into the perimeter wall of Obiri Yeboah Senior High School, causing part of the structure to collapse. Three children walking along the roadside were also struck by the bus.
The injured children were transported to hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
Police have launched an investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the accident. Motorists have again been urged to avoid reckless overtaking, particularly on busy and narrow highways.
