The United Arab Emirates has launched an emergency humanitarian operation to support thousands of families affected by the devastating floods that struck parts of Ghana on June 29.
Reports indicate that the intervention was ordered by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and is being implemented by the UAE Aid Agency in collaboration with Ghanaian authorities and local humanitarian partners.
The relief campaign is intended to provide immediate assistance to displaced residents while supporting the longer-term recovery of communities affected by the disaster.
Hours of torrential rainfall reportedly caused severe flooding across parts of the Greater Accra, Central and Volta regions, leaving homes, roads and other critical infrastructure damaged.
According to figures released by the UAE Aid Agency, the floods affected an estimated 131,825 people from 21,367 families. About 38,651 residents were reportedly forced to leave their homes, while dozens sustained injuries.
The agency also reported that 45 people died as a result of the disaster, making it one of the most serious flood emergencies recorded in the affected areas.
Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, said specialized relief teams were working with Ghanaian officials and local partners to ensure assistance reaches the most vulnerable households.
The emergency operation includes the distribution of shelter materials to displaced families whose homes were destroyed or rendered unsafe. These supplies are expected to help affected residents establish temporary accommodation and protect themselves from further exposure to the weather.
Essential food packages are also being delivered to communities experiencing shortages following the destruction of homes, markets, farms and transportation links. Particular attention is being given to vulnerable families and residents in rural or hard-to-reach areas.
Beyond immediate relief, the UAE operation is expected to support Ghana’s wider recovery program by helping affected communities rebuild and regain stability. The assistance will complement the government’s emergency response and other domestic relief initiatives.
The UAE Aid Agency said the intervention reflects the country’s broader humanitarian policy of responding rapidly to natural disasters and supporting affected populations worldwide.
Ghanaian authorities and relief organizations are expected to continue assessing the damage as assistance is distributed. Recovery efforts will focus on providing shelter, restoring essential infrastructure and helping displaced residents return safely to their communities.
