The United Arab Emirates is set to launch its first-ever passenger train service on June 30, 2026, marking a major milestone in the country’s transportation history. Developed by Etihad Rail, the project signals the beginning of a phased national rollout that will eventually connect key residential, commercial, and tourism hubs across the Emirates.
The launch follows the official inauguration of the Mohammed bin Zayed City Passenger Train Station in Abu Dhabi, unveiled by Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, highlighting the government’s push to expand sustainable and high-speed rail connectivity nationwide.
First Route Links Abu Dhabi and Fujairah
The initial phase of operations will introduce a direct passenger connection between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah, significantly reducing travel times between the capital and the eastern coastline.
Trains will depart from Mohammed bin Zayed City Station in Abu Dhabi and arrive at Al Hilal City Station in Fujairah, completing the journey in approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Ticket pricing has been structured into two main categories:
- Standard (Comfort) Class: AED 55 (approximately $15)
- Premium Class: AED 120 (approximately $32)
Bookings are already available through the official Etihad Rail website and mobile application, with early demand expected as commuters and travelers test the country’s first intercity rail service.
Expansion to Dubai and Sharjah Set for September 2026
The network’s next major milestone will take place on September 30, 2026, when Etihad Rail expands operations to include new stations in Dubai and Sharjah.
The upcoming phase will introduce:
- Dubai Station (Jumeirah Golf Estates) with direct connectivity to the Metro network
- Al Dhaid Station in Sharjah, extending access deeper into the northern emirates
This expansion is expected to significantly increase passenger volumes as the service begins to integrate with existing urban transport systems.
Full National Network to Span 900 Kilometres
Once fully completed, the Etihad Rail passenger network will stretch approximately 900 kilometres, connecting 11 cities and regions across four emirates. The system will operate a fleet of 13 high-speed passenger trains, capable of reaching speeds of up to 200 km/h.
Phased Rollout Timeline
- June 30, 2026: Abu Dhabi (MBZ City) – Fujairah (Al Hilal) | Introductory service launch
- September 30, 2026: Dubai (Jumeirah Golf Estates) – Al Dhaid | Official public network expansion
- December 30, 2026: Al Dhafra region stations (Al Sila, Al Dhannah, Al Mirfa, Madinat Zayed, Liwa) | Western expansion
- March 30, 2027: Sharjah Main Station (University City) | Core network completion phase
Last-Mile Connectivity and Shuttle Services
To support commuters traveling beyond major station hubs, Etihad Rail will introduce synchronized feeder shuttle buses priced at AED 10 per trip. These services will connect passengers to key urban destinations, including central Abu Dhabi locations such as the Corniche and Reem Mall.
A New Era for UAE Transport
Officials say the passenger rail system is designed to transform mobility across the UAE by offering a fast, efficient, and environmentally sustainable alternative to road travel. As construction and expansion continue, the network is expected to reshape intercity commuting patterns and strengthen economic connectivity between the Emirates.
With its first passenger trains set to roll out in June 2026, the UAE is entering a new phase of integrated national transport infrastructure that aims to bring its major cities closer together than ever before.
