The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its visa requirements for nationals of 33 African countries following an update to the Home Office’s Immigration Rules Appendix Visitor, published on July 10, 2026.
The revised guidance confirms that citizens of the listed countries must obtain entry clearance before traveling to or transiting through the UK for short-term visits. The requirement applies to trips lasting up to six months, including tourism, business travel, short-term study, and family visits.

Key Travel Requirements
The updated guidance highlights several important rules for travelers:
Transit Passengers: Travelers from the listed countries who are merely passing through UK airports may still be required to obtain a transit visa, even if they do not leave the airport’s international transit area.
Short-Term Visits: The visa requirement covers visits of up to six months for purposes such as tourism, business meetings, short-term education, medical treatment, and visiting family or friends.
Stateless Travelers: Individuals traveling on documents other than recognized national passports, including certain travel documents issued to stateless persons, must also secure the appropriate entry clearance before traveling.
Limited Exemptions: The visa requirement applies broadly unless travelers qualify for specific exemptions under UK immigration law, such as certain holders of diplomatic or official travel documents.
Travelers Advised to Apply Early
The Home Office is advising travelers from affected countries to submit their visa applications well in advance of their intended departure date. Applying early can help prevent travel disruptions caused by processing delays or boarding refusals for passengers who arrive at the airport without the required entry clearance.
Prospective visitors are encouraged to use the official UK Government visa application portal to determine the appropriate visa category and complete the application process before making travel arrangements.
