Upper East Regional Minister Donatus Akamugri Atanga and the District Chief Executive for Kassena Nankana West, Stephen Aeke Akurugu, have joined residents and assembly workers in a community clean-up exercise in Kandiga.
The activity, organized under the National Sanitation Initiative, brought together local leaders, community members and officials of the Kassena Nankana West District Assembly.
Participants swept public spaces, removed accumulated waste, cleared choked gutters and desilted drainage channels across parts of the community.
The exercise was intended to improve environmental cleanliness, reduce health risks and prevent flooding caused by blocked waterways.
Accompanied by senior management officials from the district assembly, the regional minister and DCE actively participated in removing debris and reopening drainage paths in key areas of Kandiga.
Speaking to the media after the exercise, Atanga described the activity as a practical response to environmental degradation and poor sanitation.
He emphasized that maintaining a clean environment was necessary to reduce preventable diseases and improve the health and productivity of residents.
Akurugu commended the people of Kandiga for participating in the exercise and pledged the assembly’s support for improvements in the community’s sanitation infrastructure.
He disclosed that efforts would be made to construct modern public toilet facilities as part of measures to address open defecation in the area.
Regional authorities also appealed to traditional leaders, youth groups and residents to make environmental cleanliness a regular civic responsibility rather than an occasional exercise.
They stressed that sustained community participation would help lower public health costs, protect the environment and reduce the risk of localized flooding during heavy rainfall.
