Venezia Sign Ghanaian Defender Rufai Mohammed on Loan From Elfsborg

Rufai Mohammed

Italian club Venezia FC have completed the signing of Ghanaian center-back Rufai Mohammed from Swedish side IF Elfsborg.

The 20-year-old joins Venezia on loan until June 30, 2027, with the agreement including an option for the Italian club to make the transfer permanent.

Mohammed’s arrival strengthens Venezia’s defensive options as the club continues its campaign in the Italian top flight. The Ghanaian defender is expected to bring physical presence, aerial strength and growing senior-level experience to the Lagunari back line.

Born on March 15, 2006, Mohammed began his development in Ghana with the Inter Allies youth academy before moving to Sweden to join Elfsborg in early 2024.

His transfer to Europe provided him with an opportunity to continue his development in a competitive environment while adjusting to the tactical and physical demands of senior football.

Mohammed gained valuable first-team experience during a loan spell with IFK Värnamo in 2025. He made 16 league appearances and scored two goals during his time with the club, demonstrating his ability to contribute in both defensive and attacking situations.

Following the completion of the loan, the center-back returned to Elfsborg for the 2026 season and earned regular playing opportunities.

He recorded 18 appearances across the Swedish Allsvenskan and Svenska Cupen before securing his move to Venezia.

The transfer represents the next significant step in Mohammed’s career, with Italian football widely recognized for its tactical and defensive demands.

Speaking after the announcement, the Ghanaian defender said he accepted Venezia’s offer immediately after learning of the club’s interest.

Mohammed explained that he had been impressed by the passion of Venezia’s travelling supporters and viewed the move as an important opportunity to develop his game in Italy.

The option to purchase him permanently will allow Venezia to assess his progress throughout the season before making a long-term decision.

For Mohammed, the loan offers an opportunity to test himself in a new league, gain further European experience and strengthen his prospects at both club and international levels.
