Veteran Ghanaian actress Grace Nortey has passed away at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in the early hours of Wednesday, August 26, 2026. She was 89.
The celebrated actress, who would have turned 90 in February 2027, recently marked her 89th birthday on February 1, 2026. Born on February 1, 1937, Grace Nortey spent more than five decades contributing to Ghana’s entertainment industry and became one of the country’s most recognisable screen and stage performers.
She built a remarkable reputation for portraying strong, outspoken and often fearless matriarchal characters. Through her roles, she frequently challenged patriarchal traditions, social injustice and other societal norms.
Beyond local theatre and television productions, Grace Nortey also featured in internationally acclaimed films, including Sinking Sands (2011) and Netflix’s Beasts of No Nation (2015), further cementing her place in Ghana’s film history.
She is survived by five children, including her daughter, Sheila Nortey, who followed in her mother’s footsteps and became an actress.
Grace Nortey’s legacy extends beyond her performances, having inspired generations of actors and contributed significantly to the growth of Ghanaian theatre and film.
Her death marks the loss of one of Ghana’s enduring entertainment icons.
