An eight-member delegation from the Volta Regional House of Chiefs has signed three Memoranda of Understanding with Chinese companies as part of efforts to attract investment and accelerate development in the Volta Region.
The agreements were secured during a business and investment mission to Foshan in China’s Guangdong Province.
The delegation was led by the President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV. The mission focused on establishing partnerships in technology, infrastructure, industrial development and direct investment.
One of the agreements was signed with Guangdong Welleap Information Technology Company. The partnership is expected to support digital transformation and facilitate the transfer of technological expertise to the region.
The initiative could help expand the use of digital systems in local administration, business development and service delivery, depending on the specific projects adopted during the implementation stage.
A second agreement was concluded with Foshan Jinting Construction Engineering Company Limited. It focuses on infrastructure and industrial development, with the potential to support construction and related projects across the Volta Region.
The third agreement was signed with SINOHUI Investment Ghana Limited. It is intended to serve as a channel for direct Chinese investment into Ghana, with particular attention to opportunities identified within the Volta Region.
The mission forms part of the House of Chiefs’ broader effort to use international partnerships to complement government-led development initiatives and promote economic activity within traditional areas.
Ghana’s Ambassador to China, Kojo Bonsu, provided guidance for the delegation, while the Ghanaian Consulate in Guangzhou supported the program and its engagements with Chinese businesses.
The delegation’s itinerary included factory inspections, business-to-business meetings and discussions with potential investors in Foshan, Shenzhen and Guangzhou.
These engagements were intended to give the traditional leaders a clearer understanding of Chinese manufacturing, construction and technology operations while allowing participating companies to examine opportunities available in Ghana.
The partnerships are expected to place emphasis on local employment, skills development and technology transfer rather than solely importing finished products or foreign labor.
Traditional leaders in the Volta Region have increasingly positioned themselves as development partners capable of connecting communities, government institutions and private investors.
Their involvement could help identify suitable land, facilitate community consultations and ensure that prospective investments respond to local development priorities.
The signing of the MoUs represents an initial step, and the eventual benefits will depend on the development of specific projects, financing arrangements, regulatory approvals and implementation timelines.
Details about the financial value of the agreements and the precise locations of the proposed projects have not yet been announced.
The Volta Regional House of Chiefs is expected to continue discussions with the companies after the delegation returns to Ghana, with the focus shifting from commitments to practical investment proposals capable of creating jobs and supporting sustainable regional development.
