Ghanaian midfielder William Bediako has joined Atlético Madrid from Berekum Chelsea, taking a significant step in his career after establishing himself in the Ghana Premier League.
The 18-year-old moves to the Spanish club on an initial loan agreement with an option to buy and will join Atlético’s Under-19 team, known as Juvenil A.
Berekum Chelsea confirmed his departure in a club statement, expressing delight at the move and wishing the midfielder success in Spain.
Bediako made his senior debut for Chelsea in October 2024 at the age of 16. He went on to register 30 first-team appearances across two seasons, gaining valuable experience in Ghana’s top division before securing the opportunity abroad.
Although described as a defensive-minded midfielder, Bediako was identified as an attacking midfielder in Chelsea’s farewell announcement, reflecting differing descriptions of his role.
The youngster also arrives with some experience of Spanish youth football, having featured for the Under-19 side of Trival Valderas Alcorcón before completing his move to Atlético.
He has already made his competitive debut for Atlético’s Juvenil A team, appearing over the weekend as he begins adapting to his new surroundings.
Bediako has also been included in the club’s squad list for the UEFA Youth League ahead of Tuesday’s fixture against VfB Stuttgart. His inclusion puts him in contention for an opportunity to gain experience in European youth competition.
Atlético approach the encounter after a 2–2 draw with Liverpool and a 3–0 victory over Manchester United.
For Bediako, the move provides a platform to build on his early senior experience in Ghana while continuing his development within Atlético’s youth system.
