Zimbabwe Investigates Helicopter Crash That Killed Businessman Wicknell Chivayo

Zimbabwe probes helicopter crash

Zimbabwean aviation authorities and police are investigating a helicopter crash that killed businessman Wicknell Chivayo, his wife Lucy “Lulu” Muteke and three other people east of Harare.

The aircraft came down in the Marondera rural area, approximately 72 kilometers from the capital, on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, and burst into flames. The group had departed from the family’s home in Gandami. There were no survivors.

Initial official accounts put the number of people on board at six, although a family spokesperson identified five occupants. Subsequent reporting placed the death toll at five, comprising Chivayo, his wife, a security aide and two pilots.

Investigators are examining a recovered flight recorder for evidence about the accident. Aviation authorities said fuel spilled when the helicopter struck the ground, triggering a fire. The cause remains undetermined.

Chivayo, 43, was widely known as “Sir Wicknell” and had become one of Zimbabwe’s most recognizable businessmen through his conspicuous spending and public giveaways. His social media presence frequently featured luxury vehicles, cash donations and gifts to religious figures and other recipients.

His business interests included government energy contracts, while his close association with the ruling ZANU-PF party made him a prominent and often divisive public figure. His wealth and political connections attracted scrutiny alongside praise for his donations.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa confirmed Chivayo’s death and expressed grief over the tragedy. Kenyan President William Ruto also paid tribute, describing the businessman as a “dear friend.”
