The Member of Parliament for Abirem, John Frimpong Osei, has cautioned teachers against engaging in amorous relationships with students, warning that such conduct threatens learners’ safety and undermines academic standards.
He delivered the warning during a ceremony at which educational materials and financial assistance were presented to more than 2,000 senior high school students in the constituency.
Mr Osei said teachers must maintain professional boundaries and fulfil their responsibilities as mentors, protectors and positive role models. He stressed that educators must never exploit the trust or authority associated with their positions.
According to him, inappropriate relationships between teachers and students can contribute to teenage pregnancies, school dropouts and lasting psychological distress, particularly among young girls.
The MP indicated that local education authorities would enforce the relevant professional codes of conduct. Teachers found guilty of misconduct could face disciplinary action and possible prosecution in accordance with the law.
The presentation formed part of a broader constituency initiative intended to reduce the financial burden on families and improve academic performance, especially as students prepare for national examinations.
More than 2,000 final-year and continuing students from public senior high schools across the Birim North District benefited from the program.
Items distributed included mathematical sets, textbooks and writing materials to support teaching, learning and preparations for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
Financial assistance was also provided to needy but academically promising students to help them settle outstanding administrative expenses and meet essential personal needs.
Mr Osei reaffirmed his commitment to supporting education in the constituency and urged teachers, parents and education officials to work together to create a safe environment in which students can learn and develop.
