Agalga Opposes Parliamentary Cocaine Probe While Police Investigations Continue

Ghana's Parliamentary Majority Leader, James Agalga

Ghana’s Majority Leader, James Agalga, has rejected the Minority’s call for a separate parliamentary inquiry into recent cocaine seizures, saying law enforcement agencies should be allowed to complete their investigations first.

Agalga said suspects had already been arrested and some had appeared before court. Launching a parliamentary investigation at the same time, he argued, could produce conflicting findings and make it harder to determine which conclusions should be relied upon. He said Parliament could consider further action after the agencies finish their work.

The disagreement follows the interception of nearly 3.9 tones of suspected cocaine at the Port of Dunkirk in France from a container that had departed Ghana. The Minority says that seizure, along with other cases it has cited since 2025, raises questions about inspections, intelligence and security at Ghana’s ports. It wants Parliament to examine how the consignments were handled and hear from the relevant state agencies.

Speaker Alban Bagbin has summoned Parliament to sit at noon on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, after the Minority petitioned for an extraordinary sitting. The Speaker’s notice does not specify the business for the recall, so the sitting itself does not establish that a parliamentary probe has been approved.

The Minority has cited seizures it values at more than US$1 billion, including a case involving more than 3.3 tones of cocaine at Pedu Junction in March 2025. That combined valuation is the opposition’s estimate. Agalga maintains that the immediate priority is to let investigators pursue the cases already before them.
