Bawumia Calls for NPP Unity, Says Preparations for Government Already Underway

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

New Patriotic Party presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged party members to unite behind the leadership elected at its National Delegates Conference, saying the NPP has already begun preparing for a return to government after the 2028 general election.

Addressing delegates in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026, the former Vice President said policy development and consultations were underway to shape the party’s next governance program.

“We will not wait for the campaign to start thinking about how to govern. The work is already underway,” he said.

According to Bawumia, policy committees have been established and engagements with stakeholders are helping the party develop proposals for its intended 2029 administration. He expressed confidence that the preparations would help the NPP regain public support.

Bawumia described the conference as a transition in the party’s rebuilding process, with delegates choosing national executives to lead its organizational efforts towards the next election.

He thanked the outgoing leadership for guiding the NPP through the difficult period following its electoral defeat and initiating reforms to strengthen its structures. He also acknowledged Acting National Chairman Danquah Smith Buttey for providing steady leadership during the transition.

Reflecting on the party’s recovery efforts, Bawumia said engagements with Ghanaians and grassroots supporters since the December 2024 election had provided lessons about party management, communication and policy development.

He stressed that effective policies required evidence, careful planning and consultation with the people they were intended to benefit. Those lessons, he said, were informing the NPP’s restructuring and preparations for government.

Bawumia also reminded members of their responsibility to scrutinize the governing National Democratic Congress and demand accountability for its promises.

Turning to the internal elections, he urged aspirants to place the party’s collective interests above personal ambitions. He said the contest should end once voting was completed, with successful candidates reaching out to their fellow contestants.

Members who failed to secure positions, he added, would remain important to the party’s work and should continue contributing to its rebuilding.

Bawumia appealed to delegates to conduct the elections peacefully, accept the outcome and return to their constituencies united around the task of restoring public confidence in the NPP.
